Know Before You Go – Stay Informed, Drive Confidently
Exploring New Zealand by car is one of the best ways to experience its breathtaking scenery and hidden gems. When renting a vehicle from Holiday Rental Cars, understanding local driving regulations — especially around toll roads and traffic infringements — helps ensure a smooth, stress-free journey.
We’re committed to making your rental experience as transparent and worry-free as possible. Here’s everything you need to know before you hit the road.
🚧 Toll Roads in New Zealand
New Zealand has a few electronically monitored toll roads, mostly located in the North Island:
- Northern Gateway Toll Road (north of Auckland)
- Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road
- Takitimu Drive Toll Road (Tauranga)
Unlike other countries, there are no physical toll booths — meaning you won’t be stopped to pay on the spot. Instead, tolls must be paid online or by phone within 5 days of travel.
Who’s Responsible for Payment?
As the hirer, you are fully responsible for paying all toll fees incurred during your rental period.
- You can pay via the NZTA website or phone.
- If payment isn’t made on time, Holiday Rental Cars will receive a notice.
- We’ll then transfer the liability to you and charge a small administration fee for processing.
Note: Holiday Rental Cars does not pay toll charges on your behalf.
🚦 Parking, Speeding, and Traffic Infringements
New Zealand enforces strict road safety laws. You’re responsible for obeying all traffic rules during your rental period.
If a parking fine, speeding ticket, or other infringement is issued during your hire:
- Holiday Rental Cars will receive the notice.
- We will process a statutory declaration, legally transferring the responsibility to you.
- Your name, address, and driver licence information will be provided to the issuing authority.
- The authority will then contact you directly for payment.
- An administration fee will be applied for handling this process.
We do not pay infringement fines on behalf of hirers.
