Understanding Fair Wear and Tear
This guide helps you distinguish between acceptable fair wear and tear and unacceptable damage. It is important to understand that intentional damage or damage caused by negligence is never considered fair wear and tear and is excluded from your insurance cover.

Dents
Fair Wear and Tear Includes:
- Dents no larger than 20mm in diameter.
- Only if they are not on bonnets or roofs.
- The paint must not be cracked, chipped, or flaking.
Fair Wear and Tear Excludes:
- Dents of any size on bonnets, roofs, wheel arches, or door edges.
- Multiple dents in the same area.
- Any dent that breaks the paint or causes it to peel.
Stone Chips
Fair Wear and Tear Includes:
- Isolated stone chips up to 2mm in size.
Fair Wear and Tear Excludes:
- More than 5 stone chips in one localized area.
Scratches
Fair Wear and Tear Includes:
- Light scratches up to 20mm in length and 1mm in width.
- No exposure of metal or undercoat.
- Must be removable with polishing.
Fair Wear and Tear Excludes:
- Any scratch where metal, plastic, or undercoat is visible.
Bumpers
Fair Wear and Tear Includes:
- Scuffs or scratches under the front bumper (not visible from 2 meters away).
- Light scuffing up to 20mm in diameter, with no paint penetration.
- Up to 5 small stone chips (≤2mm).
Fair Wear and Tear Excludes:
- Scratches where the paint is broken.
- Multiple scratches.
- Dents over 20mm.
- Damage to textured surfaces.
- More than 5 stone chips in an area.
Wheels, Trims, and Tyres
Fair Wear and Tear Includes:
- Light scuffing or scratches up to 20mm in length.
Fair Wear and Tear Excludes:
- Cracked, broken, or mismatched hubcaps.
- Alloy wheels with scuffs over 20mm, cracks, gouges, or buckling.
- Tyres with flat spots, cuts, bulges, or excessive wear.
- Tyres that differ from the original set.
Windscreen, Windows, Mirrors, and Lamps
Fair Wear and Tear Includes:
- None.
Fair Wear and Tear Excludes:
- Any cracks, chips, holes, or scratches to windscreens, mirrors, windows, or lights — as this affects roadworthiness and can worsen over time.
Interior and Cleanliness
Fair Wear and Tear Includes:
- Light marks or scuffs that can be cleaned with standard vacuuming.
- Typical day-to-day dust or debris.
Fair Wear and Tear Excludes:
- Burns, holes, or tears in the upholstery.
- Pet hair or heavy dirt/mud.
- Stains that require steam cleaning.
- Smoking-related smells or damage.
- Damage to seat structure or positioning.
Keys, Accessories, and Equipment
Fair Wear and Tear Includes:
- Minor cosmetic wear that doesn’t affect functionality.
Fair Wear and Tear Excludes:
- Lost or damaged keys/remotes.
- Damaged aerials.
- Incorrect fitting of roof racks, snow chains, etc.
- Missing items like parcel shelves, spare tyres, tools, warning triangles, child seats, or charging cables.
